Plant Care Tips
Newly Planted Trees and Shrubs
Water is crucial for newly planted trees and shrubs. One inch of water per week is necessary to establish a healthy plant. This water should continue throughout the heat of the summer.
Mulch is also important to newly planted trees and shrubs. A 3 inch layer of mulch will help conserve moisture, control weeds, moderate soil temperatures, and protect the trunk from mowers/weedeaters. Mulch also works as a fertilizer as it breaks down.
New Sod
Sod is a great way to establish an instant lawn. Newly laid sod should be watered immediately. New sod needs 1 inch of water* per day for the first week. This watering should continue for several weeks until the sod has rooted in. The sod is rooted when you cannot lift up the corner of the sod. Once the sod is rooted, you can decrease the watering to once or twice a week.
Mowing should begin once the sod is rooted in. Don’t mow shorter than 3 inches and only remove about 1 inch per cutting.
New Seed
It is important to keep new grass seed moist until germination. Once the seed has germinated, reduce the waterings to once or twice a week.
Mowing should begin once the seed is about 31/2-4 inches tall. Don’t mow shorter then 3 inches and only remove about 1 inch per cutting.
*Watering for 30 minutes is about 1 inch of water.
